‘The future of our money system: What do we water and what not?’
Three day conference, 6, 7 and 8 September 2023
What do we water, and what not?’ said the Minister of Finance Sigrid Kaag in 2021. The project The unravelling of our money system explores this question and others such as ‘Who makes our money? Where does it flow? How is it possible that large parts of our society are dry? And how can we improve the design of our money system?’.
The project is a collaboration between cartographer Carlijn Kingma, financial investigative journalist Thomas Bollen, and professor of practice in new finance Martijn van der Linden. They have used the metaphor ‘money as water’ to understand the functioning of the current monetary system, its most important problems and alternative directions, over the last 2,5 years.
During this 3-day conference we use the developed tools (drawings, video animations, audio tours and written texts) to explore possible future scenarios and to formulate policy recommendations in terms of the water metaphor.

As a participant in this dialogue session, you will have a conversation with other stakeholders in the money system. Together we will reflect from different perspectives on where we are now, deepen and look to the future. To what extent does this system still serve society? For instance, how is possible that not the entire 'tower' is watered? What opportunities do we see to shape a money system that promotes equality?
The programme is as follows:
12.00: welcome and registration at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag
12.30: explanation by Carlijn Kingma 'the waterworks of our money'
13:00: lunch at Museon-Omniversum

The outcomes of the dialogue session will be shared with all participants and provide input for the next steps in various ways. RaboResearch and the research group New Finance of The Hague University of Applied Sciences will analyse the various contributions raised in the dialogue session. These insights are in turn input for financial institutions, workshops at Springtij Festival, and ultimately to formulate (policy) recommendations.
This is an invitation-only meeting because we need representatives of all parts of the money system.
